Kitchen hygiene is important when it comes to making sure that yourself and your family stay healthy all year round. Believe it or not, many of the complications that individuals feel with their stomachs are the result of food borne illnesses. When we attribute gastrointestinal discomfort with eating certain foods, or eating at a certain time of day, we are actually ignoring the large role that kitchen hygiene plays in our day to day life. Your wellness is important, so make sure that kitchen hygiene is one of your top priorities, even if you are only preparing a small snack of fresh fruit.
There are two main contributing factors to improving kitchen hygiene. The first is improper cleaning of hands and kitchen utensils. There are many different types of bacteria which can land on either the surfaces of your hand, or on the utensils you are using at any given time. This is especially true in homes with children, who are less likely to properly wash their hands after using the rest room or playing outside where micro organisms are more likely to be present. When preparing food, you should always maintain your own personal hygiene as part of your overall efforts towards improving and maintaining kitchen hygiene.
The second factor to improving kitchen hygiene is avoiding cross contamination. Some may seem obvious, such as when you have handled raw chicken, but there are others which may not be as apparent, such as when you handle seafood and then other items. There are individuals who are sensitive to the chemicals in seafood, so it is important to be mindful of this at all times in general, but with handling any type of meat you should remember to keep everything separate. This includes your refrigerator storage as well. Kitchen hygiene begins with your ingredients, so remember that all raw meat should be placed as low in the refrigerator as possible in the following order: Fish, beef, pork, chicken. Chicken should always be on the bottom due to high tendency of salmonella on the skin, while the micro organisms on the other three are usually less prevalent. Keep tabs on your kitchen hygiene, and make sure the others in your house do as well. You will notice a lessening of stomach-related illnesses over time, which means that everyone is doing their job and keeping the kitchen safe.
